Christkindlmakt (Christ Child Markets) are a tradition in most German cities. Usually, the town square is populated by booths where people sell items for Christmas gifts. True to German tradition, there are eating kiosks with sweets, sausages, pig's knuckles, and beer sold for consumption by the market visitors. A traditional drink called Glühwein which is a hot spiced red wine is consumed in large amounts by the shoppers. The squares are usually decorated with Christmas trees, lights, crèches, and other signs of the Advent Season. This cruise started in Nürnberg traveling up the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers to Köln.
